Electricity. A high current is used to heat Nichrome wire in the barrels sufficiently to fire the flash paper and then the black powder. Nichrome wire is commonly used in heating elements in appliances and tools. The Heng Long tank I have has Nichrome wire in the smoke generator, for example.
